Saying No to Terry

I'm not saying Creigh Deeds is some savior, but he isn't Terry McAuliffe, and that's enough for me.

State Sen. Creigh Deeds has opened up a double-digit lead over former Democratic Party chairman Terry McAuliffe and former state Sen. Brian Moran in advance of Tuesday's Virginia gubernatorial primary, according to a Public Policy Polling survey conducted June 6-7.

Boosted by undecided voters breaking for him, Deeds clocks in at 40 percent to McAuliffe's 26 percent and Moran's 24 percent, with 10 percent still not having made a choice. The margin of error is 3 points.

Al Giordano has more on the significance of this Democratic primary race for the governorship of Virginia. A vote for Deeds looks like the best bet, even though Moran would probably be the optimal choice.

terry mcAuliffe is a schmuck.

I will not forget his tenure at the dnc, and his record of failure.

As a Virginia voter I have to say that I wish we had IRV right now.  Either Deeds or Moran would be fine by me.  McAuliffe - not so much.  I suppose if he won I would still vote for him in Nov, but I like him the least.

In past (general) elections, the general prescription was to try and get out as many NoVA voters as possible in the hopes that you would get out more than the folks downstate could get out.  For years and years it never really worked all that well, and even now it isn't clear that without at least some downstate support a Democrat can win.   One perceived advantage of Deeds is that he is from downstate, so the theory is that he can pull in some of the rural voters.  The perceived problem with Moran is that he is from NoVA, and it isn't clear how well he can do downstate.

Despite all of this, I would probably pick Moran as my favorite, but might end up voting Deeds to try and make sure that McAwful doesn't win the primary.

I ran into Moran at a fundraiser - I kidded with him that he has his brother's (Massachusetts) accent.  He kidded back "South Boston, Virgina, right?"

IRV complicates and already messed-up voting system. We can't even get our votes cast on paper in many states. Let's not go to IRV until we get honest elections. Then we can have that discussion. Right now, election results are opaque and unverifiable. IRV makes it that much harder to know if your vote was counted accurately.

Also - I sometimes change my mind once a race is down to two candidates. With IRV, I don't have that choice. I'm a vigorous opponent to it on that basis alone, not to mention the other issues.

If I lived in Virginia I would vote for Brian Moran. However, if Deeds is elected Governor Virginia will moved to verified voting with paper ballots and random audits.

Giordano view of the election is pretty wide the mark, at least judging by the Virginia blogs I read.

Moran's supporters were mostly in the urban part of the state, Nova, Richmond, Norfolk, and mostly people who supported Hillary Clinton in 2008. Deeds supporters were mostly in the rural part of the state. MacAuliffe's blogging support were mostly the bloggers who had supported Webb in 2006 and Obama in 2008. Go figure.

I think I HR'd the top post by accident. I didn't hide rate anyone on this thread by intent. All ratings are 4's. Booman, how can I fix this?
