It's Not Goodbye for Sarah

by BooMan

Josh Marshall sez:

...the idea that Gov. Palin just up and decided for no reason in particular to resign her office little more than half way through her term, with a hastily assembled press conference and a rambling and histrionic speech, is just too silly for serious consideration.

But, you know what? Who knows with these people? Dehr crazee. I mean, let's face it. Sarah Palin is not (and never was) going to be elected president of the United States. And even though the Republican Establishment is disoriented and at a low ebb, they're not suicidal enough to make her the nominee of their party. The real question for Sarah Palin was not how she should go about winning the nomination in 2012, but whether she should cash in on her fame and cult following while she's hot, or whether she should endure routine humiliation and mounting legal bills as an ineffectual, ethically-challenged, and increasingly unpopular governor of an Arctic state. That math seems easy enough that even Palin can solve for it.

And if she isn't going anywhere politically, and her star is starting to dim, the best thing to do is to get out now. As embarrassing as it is to quit her job with eighteen months to go, she could hardly have selected a better time to make her announcement. Other Republicans are in the spotlight for much bigger failures, most people are traveling and preparing for their Holiday weekend, and Michael Jackson will continue to dominate the news through at least Tuesday when his memorial service takes place in Los Angeles' Staples Center.

Sure, there may be some scandals bubbling beneath the surface that helped her make this decision, but that doesn't change that she's going out on top, in a position to make millions. Why risk that by staying in office and taking a daily beating?

Palin admitted it was about money in her speech.

Every one - all 15 of the ethics complaints have been dismissed. We've won! But it hasn't been cheap - the State has wasted THOUSANDS of hours of YOUR time and shelled out some two million of YOUR dollars to respond to "opposition research" - that's money NOT going to fund teachers or troopers - or safer roads. And this political absurdity, the "politics of personal destruction" ... Todd and I are looking at more than half a million dollars in legal bills in order to set the record straight. And what about the people who offer up these silly accusations? It doesn't cost them a dime so they're not going to stop draining public resources - spending other peoples' money in their game.

It's pretty insane - my staff and I spend most of our day dealing with THIS instead of progressing our state now. I know I promised no more "politics as usual," but THIS isn't what anyone had in mind for ALASKA.

She isn't going to go away. Far from it. She'll be cashing in the same way Mike Huckabee is cashing in, but with more success. Godspeed Sarah Palin. I'm winking right back atcha.

Under relentless siege from Alaska's citizens

I've caught her in at least four major lies during the past six or seven days.

"This land, blessed with clean air, water, wildlife, minerals, AND oil and gas. It's energy! God gave us energy.
I promised even four two years ago to show MY independence... no more conventional 'politics as usual'."

    Sarah Palin

How I helped drive Sarah Palin crazy by digging into her past

  • Sean Parnell: "I profoundly respect your decision for I know the depth of character and integrity from which it springs. Rare, indeed, are such selfless acts seen in the public arena."

"But I will not let myself be reduced to silence."

that Barack Obama's apparent incorruptibility and reasonable demeanor/compromise-first approach has for all intents and purposes sounded the death knell for the Republican Party?

    Just sayin'...

It is the contrast that is doing this. A lovely thing to see. The only other squeaky  clean Dem Prez in recent memory was Jimmeh Carter, and the contrast was not nearly so striking because he presented such a low-resolution image.

    Obama?

Hi-def and clean as a whistle. (So far. Let us pray.)

My own theory about Palin's resignation?

Besides the plain fact that she is crazy as a loon and hundreds of times as dirty?

She's going to front a far right-wing, Christian fundamentalist party.

    Watch.

    Remember...

She is part of a batshit-crazy Christian millenialist movement.

    Yes she is.

    Remember.

I just think she and Todd are going to go rake in millions and have the last laugh on all her detractors.  To do that, she'll have to at least play at being a political force of some sort, and maybe keep people guessing about a presidential run.  But she ain't doing it.

It's a hustle.  For Sarah, it's always been a hustle.

Keep in mind that her political career started in the first place because she was a beauty contest runnerup who used that brief spotlight to gain a following. Now she's following the same scenario with her fame/notoriety from the prez run and the soap-opera-good political and sexual titillations that come off of her like bad breath.

She's one of these clever/stupid people who's been waiting her whole life for the main chance. She's rehearsed the path in her mind a million times. Now her political hopes are gone, but she has a last stash of media magnetism to spend, and she knows how to make it pay. She has joined the ranks of the other stupid/crafty like Michael Jackson's daddy, Not-Joe the Not-Plumber, Paris Hilton, and, it looks like, Dick Cheney.

FDR's response to progressive demands: "I agree. Now go out and make me do it."

I see a clear path for Joe the Plumber if he doesn't have a girlfriend in Argentina.

Over at Brad Blog there's a story that the fed investigation about embezzling while she was mayor of Wasilla is about to break.

Heard one of the talking heads on TV this a.m. say that Palin had not laid any groundwork with Republican fundraisers before her announcement which further suggests the spur of the moment action on her part and not part of a wacky grand scheme to be President.

At this late date I don't hold much hope for any corruption charges making it through courts unless you happen to be a Democrat blocking a money-making scheme for a Rove pal somewhere in the Deep South. That said, federal charges would have some insulation from local Alaskan political manipulation and though the trial itself was blown Stevens was brought down right there in Alaska.

If I were a betting man I'd guess that Palin has discovered that raising a Downs Syndrome baby is an incredibly difficult thing to do, and maybe her politicizing and her personal life have crashed. And on the way out she just repeated the usual gibberish instead of actually telling us anything truthful.

What I would have liked was a sobbing speech where she promised that she'd never see Pablo again, but I guess that's too much to ask.

Aw, what a pity. I was so looking forward to seeing Obama eviscerate her during the next round of presidential debates.

Okay.  Let's play this game.  Who could Palin pick as a running mate that wouldn't threaten her gravitas?

Actually there might be one person, the lady McCain took the mike away from who kept saying Obama was a Arab.

The added upside she might actually make Palin look semi-intelligent.

....   and it would be the final FU to McCain for not winning then dying from Palin.

Yeah, she would be a good choice, but somehow Sarah Palin and Mr. ThePlumber make the perfect pair, don't you think?

I'm still waiting for Sarah the Barracuda and Joe The Plumber: Hiking the Appalachian Trail.  That would be a Hollywood blockbuster in the making.  Wouldn't you think?  Especially if "the nation" and not just the nutty Republicans were enthralled as the WaPo claims
