Richardson calls for paper ballots in NM

by claude
Sat Jan 14th, 2006 at 10:45:37 AM EST

Well, looks like nobody brought this up yet, but Bill Richardson, Governor of New Mexico, just cut the Gordian Knot of election reform here in New Mexico. In response to lawsuits by various New Mexico groups concerned over the integrity of the vote-counting process, and crediting those groups and citizen action with bringing this to the public consciousness it deserves, Richardson yesterday announced that New Mexico would adopt a uniform paper ballot for elections, and select approved optical scanners for the count. The paper ballots will ensure the verifyability of election results.

The Hypocrisy of Disco

by claude
Sat Dec 10th, 2005 at 05:28:29 PM EST

(crossposted at dKos and EuroTrib)

My daughter, Clane Hayward, has published her first book, a memoir of growing up hippie in the 70s, via CafePress, entitled "The Hypocrisy of Disco".  I'm exercising a proud parent's prerogative and shamelessly promoting her.

I read a lot, and I'm pretty picky about what I read. Clane's book, when I read it years ago, knocked my sox off. Stayed up all night reading it.  She finally got tired of rejection slips, found a new way to publish.  I'm sneaking a peek to you all, Chapter 3, "My Government Cage School", because I happen to have a few chapters sitting in my HD.  Some of it is relevent to today's issues, both in the real world, and at  dKos. I hope you enjoy it:

OK, that makes it an official entry, but, I'm not wanting to futz around with all that cut and paste, and these photos are being hosted by my own ISP, so I'll do it direct, no thumbnails.

Micropolitics: Guadalupe County, NM

by claude
Tue Aug 2nd, 2005 at 12:15:08 AM EST

Last year I wrote about the efforts of my local community in rural New Mexico to build a library for itself.  Some of you Kossians offered to help at that time.  Now I want to report on the status of the project and a unique situation which has developed vis a vis the Guadelupe County Commission. Gaudelupe County, one hundred miles due east of the thriving metropolis of Albuquerque,  is as destitue a rural economy as can be imagined.  It's county seat, Santa Rosa, New Mexico, clings to forlorn existence, surviving on motels and a few railroad and highway department jobs, and the public schools.  WalMart bypassed Santa Rosa, and went to Las Vegas,  60 miles to the north.  Too out there to even attract the attention of WalMart. Population, about 5000, spread out over 3000 square miles.
