CNN ran a piece yesterday on the US Fire Administration's Emergency Education Network [EENET], which operates under the branch of DHS & FEMA. They produce a channel, the 'Recovery Channel,' which is beamed into FEMA-run Disaster Recovery Centers.
From their website: the Recovery Channel "is updated every day to assure the latest and best information is available without interpretation or spin directly from those working "on the ground" to serve disaster victims. The content is a mix of practical on-camera reports, pre-taped interviews, and produced segments and text. Documents released today by the Senate Indian Affairs Committee again confirm the reach of Jack Abramoff and his associates in the White House.
A February 21, 2001 e-mail from CREA Director Italia Federici to Eric Ruff, then-Communications Director to Gale Norton at CREA notes Abramoff associate Ralph Reed's reach in the White House: From what I have been told, Ralph is working with Doolittle (don't know whether for free or as a paid consultant), and has been bending the ear of Karl Rove and possibly even the President about land-in-trust and gaming issues. Yesterday, Our Holy Saint of Reporter Ethics™, Judith Miller, testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee during hearings considering a federal shield law to further protect journalists. The only problem is the law she's arguing for would still have led to her incarceration. But, Miller's never been much for accuracy and details.
From Miller's written statement: Good morning, I am Judith Miller, a reporter for The New York Times. That statement, in and of itself, is extraordinary. Reporters don't usually testify at Congressional hearings. But the circumstances that in July forced me to spend 85 days in the Alexandria Detention Center in Virginia highlight the urgent need for a Federal shield law to protect journalists and their sources. I am here today to urge you to enact the Free Flow of Information Act so that other journalists will not be forced, as I was, to go to jail to protect their sources. I'm here because I hope you will agree that an uncoerced, uncoercable press, though at times irritating, is vital to the perpetuation of the freedom and democracy we so often take for granted.
