Slavery in Florida on Jeb's Watch: Ignoring Published Reports, He Permits it to Continue

by dfrancon
Sun Jun 5th, 2005 at 05:29:10 PM EST

CNN is reporting today that federal agents raided a slave camp filled with homeless persons in Florida.  Specifically:

Federal agents raided a migrant farm labor camp where homeless men and women were kept in what labor officials called a version of modern-day slavery.

Four people, including the camp's owner, Ronald Evans, face federal charges in a case that officials said is likely to grow. Investigators are looking into alleged environmental violations and drugs found at the camp in Friday's raid.

"The word is out that we are concerned about human trafficking, and we will leave no stone or camp unturned," said Steve Cole, a spokesman for Jacksonville U.S. attorney Paul I. Perez.

Officials said homeless people were recruited to the Evans Labor Camp through offers of room and board, along with alcohol, tobacco and drugs, which they bought on credit. But they never made enough in the field to pay it off, according to an investigative summary.

WAKE UP TEXANS: Oppose TX ban on gay marriage/civil unions!

by dfrancon
Mon Apr 25th, 2005 at 08:36:24 PM EST

As explained in this Dallas Morning News article:

After an impassioned three-hour fight Monday that called up images of civil-rights struggles and bans on interracial marriages, the [Texas] House approved a constitutional ban on gay marriages and civil unions.

NOW--not later--is the time to tell your Texas (state) Senators how you feel about this and why they should not support the measure in the Senate.  We don't want this to get to a vote of the people, because we can't trust the state that voted for Shrub (twice!) to vote this measure down.

Whining Welcome AKA Schiavo Broke My Spirit

by dfrancon
Tue Mar 29th, 2005 at 07:27:05 PM EST

Yes, it has.  Not substantively, no.  From a substantive perspective, I oppose anyone interfering with the gajillion prior courts' findings that her husband has proven her wishes and that those wishes should not be disturbed.  But that isn't what is bothering me.

Yes, the protestors are annoying, if also entertaining in their radical delusions.  However, I don't watch television, and certainly not television news.  So that isn't what's bothering me either.

So what's my problem, you ask?

Below the flip.
