This evening on CBS 3, I saw a report on the kitten crisis at Philadelphia Animal Care & Control Association (PACCA). As happens every Spring, PACCA is running out of available space to accommodate the large influx of kittens born to feral and stray cats.
From what I could tell, they've already run out of space. At this point, kittens are living in executive offices. I'm sure that's cute for a while, but can you imagine trying to work with a kitten batting at your pen and scattering your papers everywhere? And just try to resist the urge to cuddle them all day long. You can't do it.
Apparently PACCA has determined that the costs of euthanizing the animals exceeds the cost of providing lower than usual cost adoptions. Yes, that's right. Until this coming Monday June 26, you can do something wonderful and adopt a kitten for $1.00. From what I understand, this low price still includes their spay/neuter service once the kitten comes of age.
PACCA's website does not seem to have anything regarding this program and I also didn't see anything on CBS 3. I suspect this program and the publicizing of it may have been hurriedly put together.
