Big Orange Place Server Down?

by d52boy
Sat Dec 3rd, 2005 at 05:26:43 AM EST

DailyKos seems to be off-line.

Did I miss some announcement of scheduled maintenance?

Is it a DOS attack by right-wing geeks?

Anyone know?

Support 'Democracy Now!': donations needed

by d52boy
Sat Oct 1st, 2005 at 02:29:15 AM EST

Amy Goodman and her crew at Democracy Now! (www.democracynow.org) who produce the best alternative news coverage I know of, are seeking donations in cash or kind that will help them acquire needed equipment: video cameras and flat-screen monitors.

There's an ad about the video cameras on their web site, and Amy mentioned the need for monitors at the very end of her Wednesday broadcast (which I only now have listened to via podcast).

If any of you can help, please email them at mail@democracy.org, or go via the website.

These are great people, doing fabulous and important work. Please support them if you can.

Soj, say it ain't so!

by d52boy
Sun Sep 25th, 2005 at 03:37:22 AM EST

As I write this, only 12 readers have posted comments on Soj's amazing blog, Flogging the Simian, in response to her announcement that she is hanging up her keyboard.

I know everyone's attention is focused on hurricanes and marches, but I'm still shocked at the muted response.

Gay wedding: Two Canadian soldiers married on base

by d52boy
Wed Jun 15th, 2005 at 04:02:53 AM EST

The Globe and Mail is reporting that two male Canadian soldiers have been married on base.

Guess Amurika has some more catching up to do.

I vote for health care first, though.

Full story to follow.

Lin Yutang: The Spirit of Reasonableness

by d52boy
Sun Jun 12th, 2005 at 07:34:46 AM EST

I consider the education of our senses and our emotions rather more important than the education of our ideas.

--Lin Yutang (1895-1976), urbane and charming man of letters who spent a lifetime explaining China to the West.

I am rereading Lin Yutang's 1938 classic The Importance of Living, and came across this passage, whose relevance to 1938 seems no less than its relevance to 2005.

Spinning the news: NY Times liberal?

by d52boy
Thu May 26th, 2005 at 08:22:57 PM EST

Let's take the latest reports about how US interrogators and guards have been treating the Koran, and see how various news outlets are presenting them.

Nothing new here. Just a reminder that the truth is presented as a story, and stories can be told in different ways, with different effects.

Reality? That's another story.

Let us begin:

Favourite non-U.S. political blogs?

by d52boy
Sat Apr 2nd, 2005 at 06:22:00 AM EST

The booman's readership seems pretty diverse, so I'm wondering: what's your favourite non-U.S. political blog?

My personal preference is for a truly interactive format, like this one, rather than just a single voice with comments from readers.

But you tell me: any good political blogs out there in the U.K.? France? (Those are my two languages.) Canada? Germany? Spain? Italy? Elsewhere?

Is Kofi being lynched?

by d52boy
Tue Mar 29th, 2005 at 09:47:49 PM EST

I'm wondering what others here think about the latest Volcker report. Does the report vindicate Kofi Annan, or does it really mean, "We think he's guilty, but we can't prove it"?

What about the press coverage? Is the U.S. media reflecting the right wing's determination to get rid of Annan, and spinning the news to be as negative for him as possible?

What's really going on here?...
