I ruminate periodically on what the Democrats (because there really are only two viable parties in the US)need. My latest brainstorm is that we need to be on the lookout for another Barbara Jordon.

Today I was tortured by a government agency. I had to renew my Texas driver's license and couldn't do it online or by mail because it had been twenty years since I had had a new photo.

Fifteen year old Michelle Wie is playing the John Deere Classic on the PGA Tour this week. She shot one under for the first round.
Today, she opened with a birdie on the tenth, made par on the 11th, and chipped in for birdie on the par three 12th. I'm rooting for her to make the male chauvanists squirm. So, we'll do some "Wie" blogging, Comments >> (16 comments) by outlanddish
In the Sunday Dallas Morning News, not known as a bastion of liberal thinking, there is a full page devoted to the commencement address Barack Obama gave at Knox College.

He writes about the way to speak so that people can hear what is being said. Read more... (3 comments, 166 words in story) by outlanddish
Well, here I sit in Texas visiting family, and in India there are dramatic happenings. The head of the BJP, the Hindu Nationalist Party, has resigned.
It seems that he made a visit to Pakistan and said that Jinnah was a secular man. Perhaps some history is in order here. Jinnah was the first Prime Minister of Pakistan. Let me tell you about democracy in India. First, you need to know that it's a parliamentary system with two houses, both elected. There are a wide variety of parties, both local and national. This means that a coalition government is almost assured; that is, no one party will have enough members of parliament to have control. There are advantages and disadvantages to this. The largest party at the moment is the Congress Party of Nehru/Gandhi. They won the last election and took over from the Hindu nationalist BJP party. There are communist parties, Muslim parties, and parties that are limited to single states.

Yesterday the US rejected the application of the chief minister of an Indian state for a diplomatic visa. The reason given was that the purpose was not compatible with the type of visa requested. This is true, he was planning to meet with some businessmen and/or hotel owners. But, they also cancelled his normal visa.
The reason for the second action was because of his involvement in protecting some people involved in religious intolerance. It's a long story which I will try to condense. A couple of years ago now, a train with some Hindus who had been to a temple festival was travelling through a Muslim area. The pilgrims made a lot of noise and were generally obnoxious. Some Muslims set the train car on fire and some 60 people died. Then, some Hindus decided to retaliate and set Muslim houses and shops on fire, killed and raped and destroyed whoever and whatever they could. Read more... (5 comments, 369 words in story) |
