A Response to "Some Principles"

by soj
Thu Jul 3rd, 2008 at 01:24:28 PM EST

I am writing this in response to Boo's front page article Some Principles.  And since I've got tomorrow off (as do most of you, I assume), I've got time to do it and it seems appropriate.

First a few words about Boo. I've been reading his stuff over at the "orange place" for about gosh, four years now?  A long time.  And I always admired his writing and when he set up his own website I was quite honored to get an email informing me of the fact.

And he's certainly been a tireless campaigner for all the stuff I know I could NEVER do, all the political analysis of seats, the really in-depth articles about important issues and the activist stuff.  And he's done a great job of keeping his website viable and pretty much completely "civilized", which is just about impossible in this day and age.

So long story short, in no way am I criticizing the PERSON nor the work he's done.  I respect him greatly and what follows is just my response to it.  Got it?

Ron Paul, Money and Modern Slavery: Pt. 2

by soj
Sat Jan 12th, 2008 at 12:27:54 PM EST

Ok now before we get to the solutions of the problems laid out in my original diary, it's time to flesh out more of the history of money itself.

Ron Paul, Money and Modern Slavery

by soj
Fri Jan 11th, 2008 at 12:33:19 PM EST

Gosh I hate to do this.  It's Friday and if you've got a lick of sense, go read something else.  Heck it's Friday night and even I should be out doing something else other than writing this.  But this has been on my mind for days and days and I've got to get it down on "paper".

I've been watching the Ron Paul candidacy from afar here, across the ocean.  And it's been very appealing to me.  It's been very appealing to a lot of people I respect as well and I've been watching a lot of his videos of debates and town hall meetings to try and figure out why.

Screaming like old ladies over Iran

by soj
Mon Jan 7th, 2008 at 12:37:39 PM EST

Well once again the western media is up to its old tricks.  By "old tricks" I actually mean "completely unable to report simple facts".

State of the World: 2008

by soj
Tue Jan 1st, 2008 at 03:04:33 PM EST

I know what follows is going to be a little depressing.  But I don't think it has to be.  I think it can be inspirational - sometimes once you know what the problems are then you can begin to identify and discuss what you want to DO about them.

I won't cover Pakistan because it's getting a ton of coverage now, nor Iraq.  You already know what's going on in Iraq.

Everything below refers to just the last week.

Pop Quiz: Oil!

by soj
Thu Dec 6th, 2007 at 07:32:53 AM EST

You hear about it on the news every day.  You use it to transport yourself around town.  All of the goods and services in our lives are dependent on it.  Wars are fought over it, governments are toppled because of it and gigantic fortunes are amassed from it.  But how much do you know about oil aka petroleum?

Pop Quiz Time!

Guatemala, Guatepeor

by soj
Tue Dec 4th, 2007 at 05:14:21 PM EST

Sometimes it is easy to get caught up in the maelstrom of political scandals, ideological contests and overall outrage and dismay at the way life has become in these United States in today's era.

To understand where we are, sometimes it is worth taking a look at where we've been.  And to do that, I'm going to tell two stories, both set in the tiny Central American nation of Guatemala.  But it is actually a story about the United States of America.

Dirty Tricks in Bolivia

Sun Nov 11th, 2007 at 06:10:52 PM EST

Well there's more going on in the worldwide news that is completely NOT being reported on.  It's almost 1am here but I thought I'd get this out real quick.

The Big Lie About Iran's Nukes

by soj
Sat Nov 10th, 2007 at 07:59:00 AM EST

You know sometimes it drives me absolutely bonkers when so-called "journalists" fail to report on obvious, easily-discoverable and CRITICAL facts about current events.

The looming war or strike or conflict with Iran is clearly something that affects the entire globe.  Yet journalists consistently forget to mention something absolutely critical about Iran's potential to acquire/develop/build nuclear weapons.

The Death of Mr. Lazarescu

by soj
Wed Sep 5th, 2007 at 03:08:45 AM EST

It's a cold and rainy, overcast day here in Romania which seems appropriate because a man I've had the privilege to know has died.

Tomorrow I will go to his funeral in a small village near here so we can lay him to rest.  But here today I'd like to celebrate his life.

A Drug Against War

by soj
Fri Mar 9th, 2007 at 10:55:24 AM EST

I was quite ill for the past couple of days but it was just a physical illness and it has passed.  I'm not sure however if my inner sense of feeling sick at the collapse of my country's values will ever be rectified however.

Orwell's government minions in 1984 used the "memory hole" to rewrite history but I often wonder if what is actually currently happening is far worse: not a disappearance of news archives but more of a "Great Forgetting".  That is, when enough people are hit with a high enough level of shocking information the result is becoming desensitized to it.

Let's probe these awful wounds in the name of spiritual health.

Textbook Propaganda

by soj
Mon Mar 5th, 2007 at 08:19:12 PM EST

You know, sometimes its hard to figure out where people get their ideas from, especially the ones that seem so ludicrous or irrational.

I've got something of a lighter workload today so I thought I'd take you on a journey through where some of it comes from.  It's neither an exhaustive look nor a complete one, but it's a taste.

I thought that looking at a Civics textbook currently in use would be a good start.  Just through pure random Google results (i.e. it was on the first page), I'll start with this one by Holt, Rinehart and Winston entitled "CIVICS" with the subtitle of "Social Studies".

My C-Span Moment

by soj
Sat Mar 3rd, 2007 at 10:48:06 PM EST

Well I'm not a Senator or a Representative.  I've been to the chamber but only as a visitor.  But this is a blog and I can imagine that just for a moment, we could all have our "Jimmy Stewart" moment and get a chance to rise up and speak for the record.

This is what I would say.
